Public Deferral
2018 - 2021
2 channel video loop, aluminum, wood

Originally made in 2018, Public Deferral was a response to the ongoing calls for the removal of the Frank Rizzo monument from the Municipal Services Plaza in Philadelphia. At the time the city’s mayor, Jim Kenny, responded to these public demands by installing barricades and 24hr police surveillance around the statue in order to “defend” it against passersby. The work was first shown with two views of the monument’s back on either side of a freestanding screen. During the summer of 2020 the monument was removed as a result of the efforts and pressures set by the George Floyd protests in the city. One side of the work now displays video of the plaza without the statue occupying its staircase.
